The critically-hailed Monty Python musical Spamelot will visit in Australia in 2007.
'Spamelot' is Eric Idle's musical based around their 1975 Arthurian spoof film 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail'. It's homage to that film ("lovingly ripped off" runs the company line), as well as countless other Python references and Broadway satire, has been roundly praised since its 2004 premiere in Chicago. Now, after three Tony Awards, seasons on Broadway, at the West End, a North American tour and this year's Las Vegas version, Idle has promised that the triumphantly silly musical farce will visit Australia in November 2007.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Idle is keen to sign Geoffrey Rush in a part and mentions that the show will be tweaked slightly for greater appeal to Australian audiences. Idle said he's not exclusively relying on Python nerds for an audience, insisting, "It's really a musical for people who really don't like musicals. There's a point where it turns around and becomes a send-up of a musical in a Python way."
Previews begin in Melbourne in November with an official launch at Her Majesty's Theatre on December 8.
