Science and music will unite at the 2011 Meredith Music Festival, as astronomers predict a total lunar eclipse during Grinderman’s set on the Saturday night.
As a self-proclaimed science geek, it’s not often I get to write about this stuff to an audience larger than about ten people [Hey everyone, go check out my science blog! It’s hardly ever updated, but help me pretend people look at it just this once!], so excuse me while I indulge myself:
The eclipse will be in “totality” (meaning the Earth’s shadow is covering the entire face of the Moon - only possible when the Sun, Earth and Moon align) for fifty one minutes and eight seconds. Lunar eclipses, while less spectacular than solar eclipses, are still a sight to behold. As the Earth’s shadow creeps across the face of the moon, it will fade out of view only to reappear a blood-red colour.
Grinderman guitarist/violinist Warren Ellis must be excited. In 2004 his *other* band The Dirty Three played to another natural wonder - a spectacular electrical storm.
Here is some very very cool footage of a lunar eclipse in Florida, USA:
Anyway, the Meredith Music Festival will take place at the Supernatural Amphitheatre in Meredith, Victoria from December 9 - 11. So far Grinderman are the only band announced.
Want a ticket? You’ll have to enter the ballot, which can be found at www.mmf.com.au before 10pm this Friday. I’ll see you there!
