A factory containing stock for a number of independent record labels in the London suburb of Enfield has been set ablaze during the London riots, which are now sweeping the entire nation.
The factory belonged to the PIAS Group, which is a distribution company working with some of the largest independent record labels in the world and many small ones, including Sunday Best, Rough Trade, Jagjaguwar, Vice and Soul Jazz to name a few.
There were also a number of film production companies who have lost DVD stock.
An official statement from PIAS was posted on their website last night (August 9):
“There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for [PIAS] in the UK are Ireland. [PIAS] is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. [PIAS]’s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected. More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.”
This was updated later with:
“Sony DADC have actioned their Business Continuity Plan and are back up and running from a new control room in Enfield. PIAS continue to work with them to minimise the impact on the business, a number one priority for all our labels and clients. Sony DADC have identified a temporary distribution partner and it is envisaged that they will be in a position to pick, pack and ship orders in the course of next week.”
Martin Mills, chairman of the Beggars Group told Music Week that the larger labels will be less affected because they keep stock in a number of places.
Wondering how you can help? The Association of Independent Music UK issued this statement regarding the fire:
“It WILL help enormously if this week, any records you were planning on buying, from the independent labels affected by the fire and destruction of their stock, you go online and make your purchases there. It will bring in some desperately needed funds to help those companies re-manufacture the destroyed stock. Thank you."
