Tory member and friend of the Prime Minister, Christopher Shale, has been found dead at the Glastonbury Festival.
Local party chairman of West Oxfordshire Conservative Association, and personal friend of British Prime Minister David Cameron, Christopher Shale was found dead in a backstage VIP toilet at Glastonbury.
Festival organiser Michael Eavis described the death as a “suicide situation”, which British newspapers linked to the recent leaking of a memo containing Shale’s criticisms of the Tory party.
Other sources have attributed his death to a heart attack, and his family has dimissed suicide rumours.
While they do not yet know the cause of death, police have stated that “circumstances surrounding the death indicate it is not suspicious.”
Prime Minister Cameron has expressed his sadness at the passing of someone the press has described as one of his “right hand men”.
Cameron said, “He was a great friend and has been a huge support over the last decade. A big rock in my life has suddenly been rolled away. Christopher was one of the most truly generous people I’ve ever met and made a massive contribution to the party both locally and nationally.”
Shale is survived by his wife Nikki and three children. He was 56.
