Country crooner Frankie Laine has died of complications to hip replacement surgery in a San Diego hospital. He was 93 years old.
Laine was born Frank Paul Lo Vecchio in Chicago in 1913. He was one of the biggest stars of the 50s and sold more than 100 million records worldwide.His hits included 'That Lucky Old Sun' (covered later by Willie Nelson) and 'Mule Train'. However, he is most widely known for the 'Theme From Rawhide', the 1959 TV show that launched the career of Clint Eastwood.

"We are saddened to announce the passing of Frankie Laine, musician, father, husband and friend. He died at 9:15 this morning from cardiovascular disease at age 93 in San Diego, surrounded by his loved ones."

He donated his time and talent to many San Diego charities and homeless shelters, as well as the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Village. He was also an emeritus member of the board of directors for the Mercy Hospital Foundation."
