Gil Scott-Heron, the American jazz and soul musician, has died at the age of 62.
Scott-Heron was best known for his 1970 work ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’. His albums ‘Pieces of a Man’ and ‘Winter In America’ are considered major influences on hip-hop and soul artists. Kanye West was a big Gil Scott-Heron fan and used a sample of his voice on his recent album ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’.
Gil Scott-Heron was born in Chicago in 1949 and grew up in Jackson, Tennessee, The Bronx and then Pennsylvania before settling in Manhattan.
The early part of the 2000’s in and out of jail for drug possession. He was paroled in 2007.
The last Gil Scott-Heron album was ‘I’m New Here’ in 2010. It was his first album in 16 years.
