Andrew Lloyd Webber has spent this week in Melbourne tweaking his latest music ‘Love Never Dies’ before its Australian premiere tomorrow night (Saturday).
‘Love Never Dies’ is the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. Director Simon Phillips tells Undercover.fm that not only is it Lord Webber’s first ever sequel but probably the first sequel ever for a musical.
Ben Lewis, the new Phantom of this opera, told Undercover today that Andrew Lloyd Webber had written four new lines for one of his songs and that the first time he performed the new version he wrote the lyrics on the back of his mask. ‘In the scene I take the mask off so could hold the new lines in my hand,” he said. But then he got sweaty and they smudged.
Lewis confirmed that Lord Webber had also written some new musical pieces for the Australian show.
‘Love Never Dies’ opened to luke-warm reviews in London. Lord Webber has rewritten the show for Australia and has reintroduced the new parts back into the UK show.
The premiere of ‘Love Never Dies’ tomorrow night in Melbourne will be the first time the musical has been seen outside London. An all-star audience including Andrew and Madeline Lloyd Webber, Ben Elton, Barry & Lizzie Humphries and Geoffrey Rush will attend opening night tomorrow night in Melbourne.
