Cornell Dupree, the respected rhythm and blues guitarist who worked with Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon and Bonnie Raitt, has died at age 69.
Dupree had emphysema and was in line for a lung transplant.
It is estimated that during his 40 year career, Dupree played on more than 2500 albums.
He began his career as part of the Atlantic Records studio band. He plays that opening guitar on Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ and he played on her classic ‘Live at Fillmore West’ album.
Cornell played with Joe Cocker on his ‘Stingray’ and ‘Luxury You Can Afford’ albums, two of Cocker’s finest recordings.
Dupree died in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas on May 9, 2011.
