U2s mammoth 360 tour will set a new world record tonight, becoming the highest grossing tour in history.
Tonight’s show (Sunday, 10 April, 2011) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, will see the band top $558 million gross for one tour, with the record current held by The Rolling Stones with their ’05 - ’07 ‘A Bigger Bang’ tour.
They also have beaten The Rolling Stones record of the highest attendance, which was set by their ‘Voodoo Lounge’ tour in ’94 - ’95 with 6.4 million tickets. U2’s tour has sold a whopping 7 million tickets to 110 shows.
U2’s manager Paul McGuiness told Billboard that “the biggest tour ever record is something we’re very proud of having set, and to set it with a further 20-plus shows to go on the tour is kind of mind-blowing. It means that it’s a record that will probably never be outstripped.”
The band’s current tour features “the only stage with a full lightning protection system”, set designer Willie Williams told Undercover when the show made it to Australia late last year.
