La Toya Jackson has opened up about the moment she heard about the death of her brother Michael Jackson in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
La Toya said the news came via her mother while she was driving her car to the hospital. She said that she almost crashed the car when her mother broke the news.
The first call came from her father. “I was at home and my father called me,” she told Ellen. “He said “you’ve got to get over to his house. They said “he is sick and he has to go to the hospital”. Then he called me back and said “no, go to the hospital now”. That’s when I rushed over to the hospital and my mother got on the phone. It was devastating”.
La Toya said there was complete confusion as she tried to get to the hospital. “I lost my way through the hospital. I didn’t know where I was going because I was so nervous,” she said.
That was when she got on the phone with her mother’s assistant Trent. “I was saying “how’s he doing, how’s he doing. Is he okay, is he okay”. My mother’s assistant Trent wouldn’t give me an answer. She said “who is that” and he said “La Toya”. Then she grabbed the phone and screamed as loud as she could “he’s dead”.
The impact of the statement devastated La Toya. “When she did that I almost crashed the car. I started crying. My head went to the steering wheel and I started begging people on the street to drive me. My legs got so week. I said “please drive me to the hospital”. I couldn’t believe it. My heart just fell to the ground”.
