Jack White, Norah Jones, Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi talk about their time on the collaborative Rome project.
The project has been in the works since 2006, with the uber-producer behind Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells working at creating Spaghetti Western-style sounds with Daniele Luppi and guests.
Now Antiquiet has revealed a video with Danger Mouse. Luppi and guest singers Jack White and Norah Jones reflecting on the making of the album
Luppi says, “The way it was born was really out of this love, this passion that me and Brian [Burton, Danger Mouse’s real name] have for vintage Italian soundtracks from the ‘60s and ‘70s.”
Danger Mouse explains that he discovered Spaghetti Westerns in college and he has drafted some of the same musicians who performed on the original soundtracks rather than use samples.
Luppi says that the music took shape two and a half years ago, then they brought in Jack White and Norah Jones.
White says he drove around listening to the instrumentals with a handheld recorder “and I sang whatever came to mind”.
Danger Mouse says he sought out Jones because he needed a “softer voice, somebody who could be an ‘anygirl’ or ‘anywoman’.”
Jones says, “It’s been great working with Brian because he’s fun and he’s become a friend and that’s the best – when you get to make music with people you like”.
