Legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson has been named as the recipient of the Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement at the 2011 NARM Music Business Convention Awards Dinner Finale in May.
The award comes just after news that the Beach Boys unreleased classic ‘Smile’ will be released later this year.
Wilson was still a teenager when he wrote his earliest hits like ‘In My Room’, ‘I Get Around’ and ‘Fun Fun Fun’.
“Since his first recordings with The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson’s influence on the evolution of rock music has been profound,” said Rachelle Friedman, Chairman, NARM Board of Directors and CEO of J&R Music World. “He is undoubtedly one of the most important modern composers, and his work continues to resonate with people all around the world.”
However it was the 1966 ‘Pet Sounds’ album that changed the path of music. Wilson wrote and produced ‘Pet Sounds’. It was so influential that The Beatles went into the studio to try and match it and came out with ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.
Brian Wilson will receive the award at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on May 12.
Previous winners of the award include Carlos Santana, BB King, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Stevie Wonder and Fleetwood Mac.
