The number one album in the USA has reached record lows in the last three weeks. Last week's 'Dreamgirls' soundtrack was on top with sales of just 60,000 units. This week, Daughtry does slightly better with 66,000.
The pitiful sales have presented a new challenge to the record companies, who still have to put a positive spin on the figures. RCA Records, home to Daughtry, this week claimed the "Fastest Selling Rock Debut in SoundScan History".The sales figures mark the first time in the SoundScan era where the number 1 album has sold less than 100,000 units for a consecutive three weeks.
Gone are the days when Britney Spears, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and Garth Brooks sold more than 1 million units in a single week. In the USA, Gold is awarded for 500,000 sales. Platinum is awarded for 1 million sales.
