Dutch band Within Temptation say they deliberately aimed for something different for their next album ‘The Unforgiving’.
The new album is a radical change in terms of both musical direction and imagery. “Our first feeling was that we just couldn’t do the same things again,” guitarist Robert Westerholt said in a statement. “What we’ve been doing for all these years is trying to create our own sound. On our last album, The Heart Of Everything, we achieved our goal. For us, it’s the perfect album in that style. So the mission was over and now we had to do something new and free ourselves from any rules. We wanted to do something fresh but what we also didn’t want to do was force ourselves to do something different that we didn’t feel. It had to be natural. As we started to write new songs we became liberated and started to think ‘Yes, this is where we are now and it feels good!’”
