Proving that any publicity is good publicity, Parlophone have signed Pete Doherty's Babyshambles band.
London's Evening Standard newspaper has reported that the label has signed up the singer/ celebrity boyfriend/ drug fiend / troubled soul and his band Babyshambles to a three album deal that will earn the group a cool million pounds.Doherty's music has been taking a backseat to his countless arrests and court appearances over the last year, as well as his turbulent relationship with waif model Kate Moss. Obviously Parlophone must have considered Doherty's musical genius when signing him, rather than his relentless ability to generate headlines.
The newspaper quoted a "source close to the band" saying that Doherty would be overjoyed at signing with the label once home to The Beatles, and that there was actually a bidding war between record companies to secure Babyshambles' material.
Also, the source said that Parlophone have an escape clause in the contract, so that they could "pull the plug at any moment." What could happen that would make them need to do that? We'll have to wait and see.
