The media feeding frenzy over the rumoured Abba reunion is currently in over-drive with newsrooms, Channel 9 Australia included, not letting the truth get in the way of a good story.
One off the cuff comment by Abba’s Agnetha Faltskog has been taken completely out of context by the media and been turned into a full-on Abba World Tour. Channel 9’s beacon of credibility Peter Harvey even fell for it.
All Agnetha said was, “It would be fun to get together. It is just a feeling I have”.
That’s it and that’s what has been the source of the potential Abba reunion. It has even gone as far as Abba playing at the William and Kate Royal Wedding.
A Royal Wedding? Who in their right mind could even consider that William and Kate would even like Abba or if they have even ever listened to them? Why would Abba even consider performing at a British Royal Wedding? They aren’t even British. Why would Queen Elizabeth II even want a foreign group playing in Westminster Abbey, ground-zero for the Church of England.
Think about it. This is William and Kate’s wedding, not Muriel’s wedding!
The chances of Abba ever touring are next to none. Agnetha is a recluse. It is unlikely she would ever consider a tour, but a one-off performance in Sweden is maybe not out of the question.
But then Abba would have to consider can they still do it. The jump suits are out for starters. The girls would look like characters from Priscilla Queen of the Desert going down that path.
And can they even perform as a group. Abba was never a great live band, they were a recording act, a pop band as well, but even as solo performers those who do still play live do so irregularly.
An Abba reunion could be a potential disaster. The acts that have carried off the reunion thing successfully are the artists who perform consistently. To be great live, they would have to train like world-class athletes. You can’t simply pick something like this up after 30 years are expect the same magic. It just won’t be there.
Abba fans need to worry. The stories from the past week have been nothing more than media in overdrive in a slow news week. Ladrokes are posting odds of 66-1 that Abba will perform at the Royal Wedding. Ladbrokes aren’t serious. It’s just as easy was to take your money.
