Former Clash guitarist Mick Jones has revealed how he struggled to cope with being kicked out of the band, as well as Joe Strummer's dismay at having 'Rock The Casbah' appropriated by the US military.
Speaking to 'Blender' magazine, Jones confessed to dying his hair and wearing disguises in public after his 1983 split from the band, so as not to be recognised by fans and even friends."I was in a state of shock that lasted for months," he said. "I put Michael Caine glasses on, dyed my hair blond and grew a beard for a bit. We all lived in the same area and I didn't want to see people."
Jones also explained that Strummer was forever upset at having 'Rock The Casbah' appropriated as the US military's 'theme song' for the first Gulf War. The seminal tune was the first song played on Allied Forces Radio after the invasion.
The guitarist continued, "When he saw it (Rock The Casbah) put on the side of a US bomb... Joe was in tears. We hated that appropriation. We never meant anything like that."
