The man behind Mr Squiggle, Norm Hetherington, has died in Sydney at the age of 89.
The Australian cartoonist created Mr. Squiggle in 1959. The character debuted on Australian television in July 1959 and was intended to be on-air for 6 weeks. He lasted 40 years.
Norm Hetherington worked for The Bulletin from 1946 to 1961 before going full-time as Mr. Squiggle.
Mr. Squiggle was a man from the moon with a pencil for a nose who completed drawings sent in my children.
In 1990, Hetherington was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to children’s television programming.
Norm Hetherington died in Sydney after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Margaret, a daughter Rebecca and two grandchildren.
