Australian opera singer Mirusia is also Australia’s most unconventional pop star. Opera rarely graces the pop chart but Mirusia has done it twice.
The first time was with ‘Waltzing Matilda’, her album with Andre Rieu. “It is amazing for a classic artist to be in the pop chart,” Mirusia tells Undercover.fm. “It hasn’t happened for a long-time. It stayed there for a few weeks and went platinum within 10 days”.
Mirusia said it was “bizarre” seeing her name in the chart alongside acts like Eminem and Linkin Park. “It is so bizarre to be in the Top 20 and people are embracing classical music and me as an artist as well. I’m just an Australian girl, a normal everyday, average Aussie,” she said.
When she first found out she had a number one record she was out having dinner with Andre Rieu. “When we heard that, Andre and I were celebrating with the Universal crew. We were having a great party,” she said. “The CD had come out and we were having an awesome time. All of a sudden our A&R manager says “You are number one on the pop chart”. And me and Andre were like “what?, How can this be?”. For both of us it was just a megadeal”.
Mirusia recently released her solo record ‘Always and Forever’.
She is currently on a North American tour with Andre Rieu.
