Travie McCoy says he has moved on after his break-up with Katy Perry and the songs on his new album reflect that.
“I had just gotten out of a highly publicised break-up and I tend to write about where I’m at in the moment. So a lot of the songs reflect that,” he tells Undercover.fm’s Andrew Tijs. “A lot of the songs were pretty sad. After thinking about it for a while I didn’t want to pour any more gasoline onto the fire, so to speak. It was already blowing things out of proportion and taking things I was saying completely out of context”.
McCoy says he went to an all-time low when he broke up with Perry but can thank his friends for turning him around. “I literally built a cave and I was waddling in it this Olympic swimming pool size of self-pity forever,” he says. “My friends we like, ‘c’mon, bro, it is time to get out of this’. I literally have my friends to thank for pulling me out of the cave. It’s cool, because it kind of goes back to the biblical reference, Lazarus”.
Travie says he was the resurrected one. “I’m sure after being dead for four days, not that I was dead, but you stop taking the small things for granted. I have a whole different outlook on life in general. I had friends who were there just when I needed them most”.
