Ex-pat Sydney dark indie country act Howling Bells continue to grow in the UK.
Rising out of the ashes of sunny Sydney indie pop act Waikiki came Howling Bells, a distinctly darker, moodier project pioneered by brother/sister duo Juanita and Joel Stein. Their ethereal self-titled debut album was released on UK label Bella Union (home to The Dears, Dirty Three, Midlake and Fionn Regan) to rapturous reviews, scoring 9/10 from NME and a perfect score from UK webzine muiscOMH.com.They've made inroads in the motherland, touring with The Futureheads and Placebo in November and December 2006 throughout UK and Europe. In NME's year end wrap of 2006's best albums, Howling Bells managed to snare 11th place, beating The Killers, Thom Yorke, Panic At The Disco and more.
Now the quartet are going from strength to strength. They've been asked to perform a NME Awards Show on February 25, playing their biggest stage ever at Koko. Other bands commissioned for the week of shows include Babyshambles, The Shins, Kasabian and Jarvis Cocker.
Just before that, the band will release 'Low Happening' as a single and will polish off their whistlestop tour of Australia supporting Snow Patrol through mid February.
