Rufus Wainwright had a special guest on stage for his last Australian show on the current tour. Carrie Fisher joined him on stage to perform ‘Hallelujah’.
Wainwright introduced the Star Wars star by talking about their second-generation fame, both being children of famous parents. He also mentioned that her father and his mother recently passed away and joked how good it would be if his dad now got together with her mum.
The pair then did their interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’.
Fisher is in Melbourne performing her one-woman show ‘Wishful Drinking’ at the Athenaeum Theatre.
Wainwright is touring Australia for the first time since the death of his mother, Kate McGarrigle in January this year. He had to postpone the tour one-week before her death when it became clear she was not going to survive her rare cancer. He dedicated the final song from the show ‘The Walking Song’ to her talents.
His sister Martha Wainwright also got a mention and a song ‘Martha’. By the way Martha fans, he also let slip that she will be touring Australia in February.
The show at The National Theatre in St Kilda last night was different to every other show on this tour. This was the stripped-back, laid-back Rufus, just the singer, his songs and a piano, talking and laughing in between each song with the crowd. For Rufus fans, this show was a rare treat.
Expect him back soon. He was suggesting maybe even over summer.
