It has been revealed that Harvey James, best known for his time as guitarist in Sherbet from 1975, is battling lung cancer.
A Facebook page set up by his family Gabe, Josh and Alexandra, is inviting fans to ‘Send Your Love To Harvey James’.
“As some of your already know, Harvey James (ARIA Hall of Fame guitarist, Sherbet, Ariel, Richard Clapton, Mississippi and Marcia Hines) is battling lung cancer. He needs all the support he can get through this tough time. Please show your love”.
James joined Sherbet after they had already become the biggest pop group in Australia after the sudden exit of founding member Clive Shakespeare. The first recording he made with them became their biggest hit ‘Howzat’.
James stayed with Sherbet until 1982 through the misguided era when they changed their sound to rock and name to The Sherbs and then Highway to try and capture the international market. It failed dismally. The group was unsuccessful in convincing Australian fans they were now a rock band and American success was minimal.
It all came to a grinding halt for Sherbet in 1984.
Harvey had heritage. Years before Sherbet he began his career in Mississippi with Beeb Birtles and Graham Goble who later went on to form Little River Band. He was also a member of Ariel with Mike Rudd and Bill Putt of Spectrum.
