An Icelandic tourist died after a parachute jump went awry at a northern NSW dance music festival.
Australian Associated Press reports that a 27-year old traveller from Iceland was attending the Superfreak electronic music festival at the Gorge Station Retreat in Bonalbo, two hours west of Byron Bay in NSW. The festival promised DJs from Israel, Italy, the UK, Denmark and all around Australia, playing psy trance, electro, funk, house, dub and reggae, as well as a community art space, meditation workshops and adventure activities.Among the adventure activities on offer at the festival was a parachute jump from a helicopter from 2500 feet. The tourist suffered fatal head injuries when his parachute opened too late into his descent at around 6:45pm on Sunday January 7, according to police. A second parachutist completed his jump safely.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that 800 festival-goers witnessed the incident, according to a spokesperson for the festival.
The Superfreak Festival was run by organisers Freakreation, who have been running safe and successful large-scale events in the Byron area for the last three years.
