Death (or breaking up the band) is never a bad career move, well at least if you go by the biggest selling artists of 2006.

Johnny Cash and The Beatles were both Top 10 selling artists in 2006. Cash died in 2003 and The Beatles broke up in 1970, but it didn't stop them whipping the asses of today's current stars.

Country acts were the biggest stars of 2006 and that includes Australia's Keith Urban. Urban was the 9th biggest selling artist of the year, while other country acts making the Top 10 were Rascal Flatts at No. 1, Cash at No. 2, Carrie Underwood at No. 4 and Tim McGraw at No. 6.

The biggest rock act of 2006 was Nickelback. The hottest R&B act of the year was Mary J. Blige.

The top 10 selling artists of 2006 according to Nielsen SoundScan were:

1 Rascal Flatts 4,970,640
2 Johnny Cash 4,826,320
3 Nickelback 3,160,025
4 Carrie Underwood 3,016,123
5 Beatles 2,812,720
6 Tim McGraw 2,657,675
7 Andrea Bocelli 2,524,681
8 Mary J. Blige 2,485,897
9 Keith Urban 2,442,577
10. Justin Timberlake 2,437,763
