The new album for Smashing Pumpkins will be released in 2007 and it will be followed by a world tour, so says frontman Billy Corgan.
In a posting at his official website, Corgan writes "This year for us will see a new album of songs and a world tour of tears, and we truly look forward to playing again for fans young, old, and missed."Finalising the tracklisting sounds like the next chore for the Pumpkins. "Tunes are being dusted off, while others are being asked to kindly submit to an upstart millennia and all it's asking."
It will be interesting to hear what the new record sounds like. Corgan says "we have turned the page and moved on, from places and faces, names and games. This age calls for resolve and certitude, and the fire within to burn ever bright. If that fire should be connected to absolutely deafening guitars, thundering drums, and the melodies of snakes, then so be it".
Work on the album was said to have been concluded in October with producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Darkness) but Corgan is also reported to be chasing addition production work through Terry Date (Deftones, Pantera).
While he has talked openly about the new record, Corgan has still not revealed the current line-up for The Pumpkins.
Jimmy Chamberlain is definitely in the band but the inclusion of James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky is uncertain.
Smashing Pumpkins last official studio album was the 2000 release 'MACHINA/The Machines of God'. Another album entitled 'MACHINA II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music' was rejected by the band's record label Virgin. Smashing Pumpkins ended up giving the album away as free downloads on their website.
Since the break-up of Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan has had a checkered career. He spent 2001 playing guitar for New Order and later that year released an album with his new band Zwan.
After Zwan failed to attract interest from the general public, Corgan broke up the band.
In 2005, he released his solo album 'TheFutureEmbrace'. Again it had a lukewarm reception from fans.
