Paul Weller has become the favourite to win the Mercury Music Prize, 33 years after his first release.
Weller's latest album 'Wake Up The Nation' has seen him make the shortlist for the prestigious prize, keeping company with Dizzee Rascal, The XX, Biffly Clyro and more. The stats come from London bookmakers William Hill who received hundreds of bets in "the space of about an hour and a half", and were reported by The Guardian.
"In no way are we suggesting that this surge in bets reflects anything untoward in the Mercury camp. The change in odds is not a comment on the integrity of the judges," Rupert Adams of William Hill told The Guardian.
"Our feeling is a consensus has built that Weller is likely to be handed the award because it could well be his last chance to win it."
The prize will take place today, Tuesday September 7 at 10pm, UK time (which will be 5am Wednesday, AEST).
