Johnny Cash's posthumous release - 'American V: A Hundred Highways' - has topped the American Billboard Chart, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
It is Cash's first number one since 1969's seminal 'Johnny Cash at San Quentin' release, selling 88,000 copies. It is, in fact, the lowest selling number one since Nielsen introduced Sounscan in 1991. The previous 'low' was Destiny's Child's '#1s', which moved 113,000 copies in its first week in 2005.Producer Rick Rubin, who launched the 'American' series on his American Recordings label in 1994, said in a statement, "It meant so much for Johnny to be accepted by a new audience. Nothing would make him more proud than this overwhelming vote of acceptance. Thank you."
Rubin plans to release the next in the series, 'American VI', in 2007.
