If Weezer’s last cover wasn’t ludicrous enough, the cover of their next album is exactly what you fear it might be.
In the 'Pork And Beans' clip, Weezer wryly collected YouTube meme personalities. With the leaping dog cover for Raditude, they attempted their own meme. Now Weezer submit to post-ironic desperation with the cover to their forthcoming album Hurley. It's not a logo for the clothing company… it's Hurley. From Lost. Or, more accurately, a stark close-up of a grinning Jorge Garcia, who played the character on the sci-fi show.
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo told Spinner in an email interview, "I just loved this photo of Jorge Garcia - it just had this amazing vibe."
"We didn't want to do a fourth self-titled record and we knew people would refer to it as 'the Hurley record' even if left it without that title, so we just called it 'Hurley.' No words are on the cover because all we wanted was his amazing face."
The photo is actually just part of a larger snap of Cuomo and Garcia buddying up for a fan pic (Cuomo is only up to series two and fretted that Garcia might drop some spoilers into the conversation).
Weezer have been making some interesting choices of late, as well as this. They recently played a show at the US Open of Surfing, and closed their set at Montreal's Osheaga festival with Lady Gaga and MGMT covers.
But we shall hold back judgement about whether Weezer are long over the shark until we hear more tracks from Hurley. A new song called 'Memories' is floating around on the internet right now.
