Wyclef Jean has confirmed that he will run for the position of President of Haiti.
Undercover reported on July 27 that the Haitian-born singer had filled out the paperwork, but a campaign had not yet been confirmed.Jean announced his intentions of Larry King Live on CNN, ending weeks of speculation spurred on by the fact that he resigned from Yele Haiti, a non-government organisation that he co-founded in 2005.
Jean was born in Haiti, but has lived in the United States since age 9. He has always kept his Haitian citizenship and has put in tireless efforts to help improve conditions in the country.
"My decision is a draft," he says on his campaign's official site. "I'm being drafted by the youth, meaning that as a Haitian citizen, if I'm to just stand back for another five years and just watch this country getting toppled after going on the ground and picking up bodies, dead bodies of kids, then I won't be able to sleep at night."
According to current Haitian laws, if you have another passport, you are ineligible for the Presidency, but Jean has a Haitian passport with a Green Card.
