Beach Boys Label Threatens Katy Perry With Law Suit

The Beach Boys’ record label Rondor Records is threatening to sue Katy Perry for violating copyright with her song ‘California Gurls’.

The New York Post reports the lawsuit is in the making, but a spokesperson for the label told Billboard.com that "there is no lawsuit against the writers or publishers of 'California Gurls'. We have established diminutive claim. It is up to the six writers and various publishers of 'California Gurls' to decide whether they honour the claim or not."

The claim says that the Katy Perry tune ripped off the Beach Boys 1965 hit 'California Girls'.

The song was written by Mike Love and Brian Wilson, although the lawsuit is coming from the label and not the artists themselves.

In an earlier interview with Billboard.com, Mike Love said "I think the part she did is pretty cool. There are a lot of writers on it, and I think it's probably a stroke of genius to have the king of canine cool, Mr. Dogg, do his thing. But I think her creative part, her musical part, is pretty hooky. I think it brings the Beach Boys' 1965 classic to mind, that's for sure."

At the very end of Perry's song, Snoop Dogg says "I really wish you all could be California girls."
