Former Fugee Wyclef Jean has filled out the paperwork to run for President of Haiti.
Canada'sLe Droit paper reports that Jean has not yet confirmed a campaign, but he has filled out the necessary paperwork to run in their November 28 election.Wyclef Jean was born in Haiti and has been heavily involved in his home country's affairs more recently, after moving to Brooklyn in his youth.
In 2004 he released an album in Haitian Creole called Sak Pasé Presents: Welcome to Haïti (Creole 101) and in 2005 started the Yele Haiti Foundation.
The foundation provides thousands of scholarships to children all across Haiti, and had plans to build schools. But it has also been subject to criticism for perceived corruption and a lack of transparency.
In 2007 he became a roving ambassador for the country and was heavily involved in recent hurricane and earthquake relief efforts, performing benefits and delivering aid and food to the people through Yele.
It was through the Yele Haiti Foundation that a comment came about his presidential aspiration.
A spokesperson said, "Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward."
