President George W. Bush has paid tribute to the Godfather of Soul James Brown, who passed away in Atlanta on Christmas Day.
In a statement released by the White House, Bush said "Laura and I are saddened by the death of James Brown. For half a century, the innovative talent of the "Godfather of Soul" enriched our culture and influenced generations of musicians. An American original, his fans came from all walks of life and backgrounds. James Brown's family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers this Christmas."In a equally glowing tribute, Grammy Awards President Neil Portnow said "Few musical artists of our time wear the term 'legend' more suitably than three-time Grammy winner James Brown. His unique style, persona and array of groundbreaking recordings have influenced musicians and music fans worldwide. We were proud to have him grace the Grammy stage only two years ago where he continued to show why he always will be remembered as The Godfather of Soul. James Brown's legacy will be with us forever."
