APRA has added three new categories for the APRA Awards for 2010 - `Rock Work of the Year` and `Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year`.
“The introduction of the Rock Work of the Year is an important step forward in recognising the incredibly talented songwriters working within this genre. Over the 25 year history of the APRA Awards, we have constantly looked to evolve the Awards to accurately reflect, and celebrate, the ever-changing landscape of Australian music,” said APRA|AMCOS’s Director of Member Services, Sally Howland.‘Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year` will feature five nominees with the winner selected from APRA’s Board of Writer and Publisher Members.
In other changes, Jazz Work of the Year has been moved to the Classical Awards program which is on hold for 2010 and returning in 2011.
Attention will also be paid to digital and online performances for the first time. “We have restructured this year’s APRA Awards to take into account the digital space as we realise the importance that online performance has upon the reach and listenership of Australian music,” said APRA/AMCOS CEO Brett Cottle.
2010 APRA Awards Categories are:
Most Played Australian Work - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Most Played Australian Work Overseas - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
International Work of the Year* (Previously Foreign Work of the Year) - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Blues and Roots Work of the Year - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Country Work of the Year - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Dance Work of the Year - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Urban Work of the Year - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Rock Work of the Year* - Based on APRA’s statistical analysis
Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year* - Decided by APRA's Board of Writer and Publisher Directors
Songwriter of the Year - Decided by APRA's Board of Writer and Publisher Directors
Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music - Decided by APRA's Board of Writer and Publisher Directors
Song of the Year - Voted for by APRA members
The 2010 APRA Awards will be held on June 21 in Sydney, as part of the Song Summit.
