The Wombats have announced that they will be releasing two new singles over the next few months.
The singles are the first new tracks to be recorded since the release of their debut album 'The Wombats Proudly Present,A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’ in November 2007. The first single will be released on 15 December, and is a special one-off seasonal song entitled 'Is This Christmas’. The single will be released on CD and two 7' formats. Is This Christmas’ will be followed by the single 'My Circuitboard City’ on 9 February. The single, which sees the band’s sound develop and progress in a more post-punk, scuzzier direction, was produced by Tore Johansson (The Cardigans; Franz Ferdinand) at London Metropolis Studios. The song demonstrates a darker and more mature side to the band, with lyrics encompassing the experiences of the surreal, and often lonely, life of a band on the road. As ever with The WOMBATS, the bleaker lyrical content is belied by hi-octane, effervescent music that has become so distinctive to their sound and imperative to their success in the past year.
The WOMBATS have also recently been announced as one of the five nominees to compete for the MTV Europe Music Award for 'Best UK Act’. The WOMBATS will compete against UK soul stars Adele and Duffy, X Factor winner Leona Lewis and Manchester indie-pop band The Ting Tings. The winner will then face off against other regional winners from across Europe in the Europe's Favourite category. The MTV Europe Music Awards are being held at Liverpool's Echo Arena on 6 November.
Ahead of the single releases, The WOMBATS will be playing a 7-date tour of the UK, including a massive homecoming headline show at the new Liverpool Echo Arena on 22 November where they will become one of the first indie bands to play the 10,000 capacity venue. The gig will be The WOMBATS' final show of the year before they take a break from touring to work on their new album.
