The memorial concert for the late Diana, Princess of Wales sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale on Wednesday.
Organisers announced that they hoped more tickets will be made available at a later date. 22,500 tickets were sold in around 20 minutes, though the newly refurbished Wembley Stadium, where the concert is to be held, will have a capacity of around 60,000.Predictably, scalpers have hit auction site EBay, attracting bids of up to £500 for the £45 tickets. In a surprising move, EBay have promised to remove all such auctions from the site as soon as possible, "as a mark of respect for the memory of the late Diana".
EBay have previously seemed to advocate ticket scalping, as evidenced by recent threats of legal action in Australia against promoters of the rock festival Big Day Out.
The concert takes place on July 1 next year, marking the tenth anniversary of Diana's 1997 death in a car accident in Paris. Sir Elton John is scheduled to headline the event, with speculation mounting that he will perform his tribute version of 'Candle In The Wind'. He had previously vowed never to play the song again, unless specifically asked by Diana's sons, Princes William and Harry.
