When John Lennon stated `We`re more popular than Jesus now` about The Beatles back in the 60s he was forced to make a public apology. Today, Elton John is faced with the same problem after his outrageous `Jesus was gay` quip this week.
In an interview with Parade magazine, Sir Elton said "I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems.”What was probably an innocent comment in his mind has angered religious groups all over the world.
Luke Coppen of the Catholic Herald commented "Someone once said we all try to remake God in our own image. It's just possible that Elton John might be guilty of that."
Stephen Green from Christian Voice called Elton’s comment "a desperate cry for attention".
Sir Elton is on good company with blasphemous comments. Lennon lead the brigade with his Beatles comment which in fairness at the time was true. When Lennon said ‘We’re more famous than Jesus’ on July 29, 1966 the four Beatles were the most famous names on Earth.
Madonna attempted to be blasphemous in her ‘Like A Prayer’ video that featured a black Jesus-like figure being crucified. Jay-Z also used a Christ-like figure in one of his videos and created a few ripples. Mick Jagger was considered by some groups to be Satan after the Stones released ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ in 1969.
However, leave it to Sir Elton to come up with a new controversial comment after all these years.
