The Knack pretty much fall into the one-hit wonder category but what a one hit it was . `My Sharona` is a rock classic.
Lead singer Doug Fieger lost his battle with cancer on Sunday (February 14, 2010). He was 57. He will always be known for that massive hit ‘My Sharona’.When we say ‘My Sharona’ was their one hit, technically they did break into the Top 40 two more times. ‘Good Girls Don’t’ reached no. 11 in 1979 and ‘Baby Talks Dirty’ reached no. 38, but ‘Sharona’ is the only one that still gets airplay.
Sharona is a real person. Doug Fieger met Sharona Alperin when she was 16. She is now a real estate agent in Los Angeles.
Guitarist Berton Averre wrote the riff years before he joined The Knack.
The song re-entered the chart in 1994 off the back of its placement in ‘Reality Bites’.
Even George W. Bush has the song on his iPod.
The Knack released ‘Get The Knack’ in 1979. It was a number one album around the world. The next record ‘But The Little Girls Understand’ reached no. 15. The third album ‘Round Trip’ in 1981 stalled at no. 93.
The Knack broke up in 1982 but reformed in the 90s failing to repeat the original success.
Doug Fieger was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005. In 2006 he had brain surgery to remove two tumors.
Doug’s brother Geoffrey confirmed his death in Sunday. He died at his home at Woodland Hills, California.
