The Movements: Like Elephants 1

Swedish rockers The Movements have really out done themselves with their latest album ‘Like Elephants 1’. Now for those of you who know The Movements you’re probably expecting your favourite brand of rock – however this time they have evolved their sound into a psychedelic whirlwind of trance and rock and it definitely suits them

You’re probably wondering why there is a number one at the end of the title like I was when I first heard about this piece. ‘Like Elephants 1’ is only the first part of a two part series. However as much as we loved part one – we will have to wait until 2014 before we hear the highly anticipated second part ‘Like Elephants 2’.

The fun thing about ‘Like Elephants 1’ is that it tells a story. It is evident that the tracks have been sequenced in order to do so. The final track on the album leaves you wanting more – in anticipation for the second album, which I suppose will continue the story along.

I was a bit worried when I discovered the shift in genres. I have always liked The Movements and the way their raw and emotive music sounds. However ‘Like Elephants 1’ is exciting because even though their tracks have shifted and are now deeply psychedelic the rock element is still maintained throughout.

The Movements have even proved their talent creating this genre without using layering which is evident throughout most psychedelic tracks these days. Although there is a different vocal approach and vibe the lyrics are still that of a great rock track.

I mostly loved the stunning keyboard lines present throughout the album.

This albums song to listen out for is definitely the first track of the album – ‘The Death of John Hall D.Y.’. This track is a combination of their signature garage rock genre mixed with their new found psychedelic vibe. It’s fun yet serious at the same time – and doesn’t lose the garage rock we know and love.
