Melbourne’s legendary pub venue The Tote will close today and Melbourne’s top live acts will play it out from 2pm.
After 27-years The Tote has been forced to close its doors suddenly because of government changes to licensing laws.Licensee Bruce Milne says punters should stay calm today. ‘The Tote will be old news by mid-week but we must not let the larger issue go away,’ he says.
Doors will open from midday and bands will play half hour sets from 2.20pm after Sean Greenway’s partner Noni (God, Freeloaders, Yes Men) scatters some of his ashes on the band room stage.
‘This Monday night is a celebration,’ says Bruce Milne. ‘Whilst only a tiny number of people can be in attendance, the spirit of many more will be in the room as they listen in on radios - and computers throughout the world. It’s an amazing collection of artists that have been such an important part of The Tote’s history.’
You can hear the final performances streamed from www.pbsfm.org.au or www.rrr.org.au 8pm tonight.
