Sir Elton John has slammed the ultra-conservative Australian Prime Minister John Howard for his backward stance on same-sex unions.
Sir Elton, who is currently performing in Australia, made it clear during an interview in Sydney that he doesn't hold in high regard the government's official stance on gay rights. The pop star was asked what he'd like to say to Howard if given the opportunity - he responded with an unequivocal "up yours".
Sir Elton and his long-time partner David Furnish last year became one of the first gay couples in the UK to join together in a civil partnership ceremony. Despite the Howard government claiming it is not "anti-homosexual", gay couples are yet to enjoy the same legal rights as heterosexual unions.
Howard, borrowing from a similar rhetoric as his rumoured male lover George W Bush, said in June, "It is not a question of discriminating against them. It is a question of preserving as an institution in our society marriage as having a special character..."
