MacKenzie Theory was one of those great Australian bands that if you blinked you missed them. They were around from 1971-1974 for two albums and then they were gone.
Gil Matthews labour of love Aztec Records has just re-released the remastered debut from MacKenzie Theory ‘Out of the Blue’.Matthews and Rob MacKenzie go back to the days of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs when Ron was a guest guitarist for the band.
MacKenzie Theory was guitarist Rob MacKenzie, electric viola player Cleis Pearce and the rhythm section of Mike Leadabrand on bass and Andrew Majewski on drums.
The original ‘Out of the Blue’ album was released in June 1973 and recorded live in the studio. “The band’s music was predominately improvisational,” says Rob MacKenzie in the cover liner notes. “Every gig would be different. The only constant was the bass. I wrote the pass parts for the songs and I thought them to Mike and that’s what he played. Everything else over the top was improvised”.
Mushroom Records released the original album and did put out a CD version in 1993. Apart from those two times of activity MacKenzie Theory ‘Out of the Blue’ has been pretty much unavailable.
