Radiohead front man Thom Yorke has turned up in Copenhagen to attend the Climate Talks that are currently underway.
“I wanted to see what was going on really, because I have been reading the blogs for days really and I can’t really understand it,” Yorke said in an interview with Grist.tv. “It doesn’t really make sense. Another reason I’m glad that I’ve come is that they seem to have thrown the NGOs out which I think is absolutely outrageous because they’re the people that have kept the argument going when no one else could. He refers to the negotiations as “a lot of uptight middle aged men doing the negotiations who need to see through through little spheres of self interest and see the bigger picture.”
His last minute trip was made possible by some kind of wrangling. He even admits that he is there as a press person. He even says “Can you imagine they’d let me in otherwise? See how long it lasts before I get kicked out.”
The talks are currently being held in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. It is estimated that 46,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide will be the carbon footprint of the talks, or the annual footprint of approximately 2,300 Americans.
On Wednesday, November 26, 2008, the United Kingdom passed a law that requires it to cut its emissions by 80% by 2050. The change was spearheaded by Yorke’s “Big Ask” campaign.
