Joshua Dibb a.k.a. Deacon of Animal Collective has been invited to play at the Festival In The Desert in Mali, but needs your help.
The festival organisers are unable to pay for his international flights to the country, so he has turned to his fans for help. The singer has turned to the website kickstarter.com to help raise the money. He has a goal of $US25,000 and at the moment has raised $970.
If you are one of the first people to pledge $20 or more, you will get a signed photograph of Dibb while he is on his African travels.
Put it this way. If you love Animal Collective, and you have never bought an album because you have downloaded it illegally, you had damn well better slip him a $20 if you want to sleep at night.
The festival is filled with local and international musicians and takes place in the middle of the Mali desert, about two hours from Timbuktu.
“It's one of the few honest things I have been part of in a long, long time,” Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant said of the festival. “It's amazing to play out in the sand. There are no doors, no gates and no money. It reminded me of why I sang in the first place. It's not commercialized.”
There might be no doors, no gates and no money, but getting there can be potentially hazardous. The festival’s official website says “we highly discourage trying to reach the festival on your own, as it can be difficult and potentially hazardous traveling alone without an expert guide or driver. Customized tours are available for a safe and unforgettable experience.”
