Michael Jackson managed only to sing the chorus to 'We Are The World' during his much-touted comeback performance at the World Music Awards in London.
Reuters reports that the pop star's voice struggled, cutting out completely as he attempted the higher notes. Jackson had also been expected to perform 'Thriller', but this task was left to R&B singer Chris Brown, much to the disappointment of Jackson's fans.Jackson, unsurprisingly, displayed none of the confidence that made him one of the most vital pop performers over the last three decades, despite performing in front of a contingent of adoring fans. He did manage to shout "I love you" at one stage, as the ceremony came to a close.
Jackson was at the event to accept the Diamond Award, recognising album sales in excess of 100 million.
There was still much love for the once king of pop, with Beyonce declaring, "tonight we are celebrating 25 years of 'Thriller'. If it wasn't for Michael Jackson I would never have ever performed. I love you, we all love you."
Gareth Grundy, deputy editor of Q magazine, was less diplomatic, telling Reuters, "I would say there's very little chance of him coming back from where he is. I think people will always be fascinated by the freak show, and that's what's going on. I would categorise him as a celebrity as opposed to an artist."
Jackson, sporting long, straight black hair, spoke briefly at the event, saying, "I am greatly humbled by this award. It was my dream that 'Thriller' would be the biggest-selling album ever ... and God has answered my prayers."
He plans to release a new album next year.
