Elton John has declared that organised religion should be banned, as it turns some people into "hateful lemmings".
Sir Elton singled out the homophobia which pervades most mainstream religions as a particular cause for concern."I would ban religion completely, even though there are some wonderful things about it," he said in an interview with Sunday's Observer newspaper.
"Religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people. It turns people into hateful lemmings and it is not really compassionate."
Sir Elton hit out at the Catholic Church in 2000 for their anti-homosexual dogma.
Whilst claiming he respected the teachings of Jesus Christ, the pop singer went on to claim, "The reality is that organised religion doesn't seem to work."
Religion joins Madonna, Taiwanese photographers and the Cannes film festival press gallery as a recent target of an Elton John verbal tirade.
