We will not be hearing another Radiohead album in a while, at least not if Thom Yorke has his way.
The Radiohead singer has told believermag.com that as far as he is concerned, the music industry has hung on to the concept of the album for far too long.“The music business was waiting to die in its current form about twenty years ago. But then, hallelujah, the CD turned up and kept it going for a bit. But basically, it was dead," he said.
The new Radiohead song is a one-off download only. Yorke admits it is the new direction for Radiohead.
"None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again. Not straight off. I mean, it's just become a real drag. It worked with In Rainbows because we had a real fixed idea about where we were going. But we've all said that we can't possibly dive into that again. It'll kill us," he said.
He describes the music labels as being in “the sell plastic discs industry”.
Radiohead tried a new model with the release of their last album ‘in Rainbows’. They made it available for any to download and pay whatever they wanted for it.
It was estimated that 9 million people downloaded the album.
When it was released as a physical product it sold 3 million CDs.
