A video was released today showing graphic footage of Michael Jackson`s hair on fire in that Pepsi TV commercial gone wrong from 1984.
In the footage, Jackson is seen still dancing unaware for a few seconds that he has been injured. His hair and head are clearly on fire.
Those around Jackson quickly smother the flame and when he is lifted up you clearly see the bald patch that has plagued him all of his life. The hair never grew back and from then Michael wore a wig to cover it up.
There is an argument that the start of Jackson’s addiction to painkillers and plastic surgery also began that day.
Michael suffered second and third degree burns to the face and scalp following an explosion from pyrotechnics that went off too early during the filming.
He had to undergo surgery because of the burns and the beginning of his multiple surgeries can be traced back to that day.
Jackson also started to use potent painkillers from that time as well.
The accident occurred on January 27, 1984. The singer was filming the Pepsi commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with an invited audience of around 3,000 fans.
The pyrotechnics worked as planned until the sixth take. Jackson was badly injured.
Us Weekly uncovered the footage. You can watch it here:
