Had Michael Jackson not died a fortnight ago, Rob Thomas would have the number one album in Australia this week.
Team Thomas did a magnificent job of working up to the release of his sophomore solo album but who in the marketing department could have foreseen the events of this week three months ago.‘Cradlesong’ sold 13,042 units in Australia last week. It would have been number one if not for Jackson’s death. Jackson held on to the top three spots with ‘The Essential Michael Jackson’ at number one clocking up an extra 24,035 sales last week, outselling ‘Cradlesong’ by almost two to one.
Considering the price Michael paid for his number one album this week, I’m sure Rob is content with his position 4 debut.
In fact his next promotional move will be something Michael will never get to do again. Rob is heading down to Australia in two weeks to talk to us about the new album.
Other debuts this week on the Australia chart were Mark Vincent ‘My Dream - Mio Visione’ at 5, Hillsong ‘Faith + Hope + Love’ at 11, La Roux ‘La Roux’ at 22, Wilco ‘Wilco’ at 47, The Galvatrons ‘Laser Graffiti’ at 61 and Brad Paisley ‘American Saturday Night’ at 67.
