At least eleven people have been killed and forty injured at the Mawazine Festival at the Hay Nahda Sadium in Morocco on the weekend.
The festival, which featured the likes of Kylie Minogue, Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder, but the deaths occurred as people tried to leave.Moroccan Police said the death toll includes five women, four men and two children.
Reuters says the injuries occured after a stampede caused by a falling fence. The festival has also been accused of poor crowd management.
“The doors were closed by the police and we were forced to leave the stadium from some places not destined for this purpose,” one festivalgoer told NME. “The police did not intervene.”
In the same article, NME also quote Hassan Lamrani, Governer of Raat, saying: "At the end of the concert and despite the existence of seven gates, a group of citizens decided to go over the metal barriers to have a quick exit.”
The incident is reminiscent of the ill-fated Roskilde Festival in 2000 where 9 people were killed during Pearl Jam’s set.
